Types of EV explained

"EV" covers three kinds of vehicle. Here is how each one works, in plain language.

HEV

Hybrid electric vehicle · Hybrid

A petrol engine works with an electric motor and a small battery. The battery charges itself as you drive and brake, so you never plug in.

Good to know: Uses less fuel than a petrol-only car, especially around town. Refuel as normal.
Charging: Never needs charging.

PHEV

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle · Plug-in hybrid

A larger battery you charge from a power point or charger, plus a petrol engine. Many everyday trips can be driven on electricity alone.

Good to know: Electric driving for daily trips, with the petrol engine ready for longer journeys.
Charging: Plug in at home or at a charger. It still drives as a hybrid when the battery is used.

Battery electric vehicle · Electric

Runs on electricity only, from a battery you charge at home, at work or at a public charger. No petrol engine and no fuel stops.

Good to know: The lowest energy cost for most drivers who can charge at home, and a quiet, smooth drive.
Charging: Charge at home overnight, at work or at a public charger.

Start with your life, not the spec sheet

Your daily driving, overnight parking, charging access and longer trips decide which type suits you best. There is no single right answer: an electric vehicle suits some drivers very well, a plug-in hybrid suits others, and a hybrid suits people who would rather not plug in at all.
